The modernization project reportedly aims to double the plant's annual production capacity from 250,000 to 500,000 tons. It was also announced that various intralogistics systems, process optimization solutions, technology packages, and smart sensor systems are to be installed in all production units, including the melting shop, scrap yard, and ladle tracking systems.
The project is tailored to Marcegaglia's specific requirements, based on a recent Through-Process Optimization (TPO) study conducted by Primetals Technologies, it was announced that the TPO assessment provided Marcegaglia with a comprehensive analysis of its steelmaking plant, identifying bottlenecks and outlining potential improvement measures. As a key assessment result, the improvement roadmap highlights the recommended actions to achieve a streamlined implementation process.
Primetals Technologies announced that it is to install Melt Expert, a fully automated electrode control system for electric arc and ladle furnaces. Medium-term plans include the implementation of process optimization software (Level 2) for the argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD), ladle furnace (LF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) plants, which are not currently in an automated environment. It was reported that replacing the electric arc furnace is one of the long-term plans to meet future productivity increases.
