The decision to restart came as a result of a strategy to close the gap with recorded energy prices in Europe by reducing costs and co-operating with the government. It was stated that it took place in difficult market conditions for European steel producers.
The company said in a statement: "The restart of the furnace is a positive development for Galati, but we continue to focus on operating costs in order to maintain our commitment to offer competitive and high-quality Romanian steel. Our focus on cost-competitive semi-finished products will improve commercial payments in the coming months by increasing mill utilisation and improving cash flow. We are currently looking for solutions to reduce the energy cost gap in co-operation with the government."
