Innovative steps are taken with EAF investments in steel production

UK Steel announced that steel mills are mixing different ratios of pig iron or Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in their EAF plants in order to increase their product range, with significantly positive results.

In the article, UK Steel stated that it encourages steelmakers in Europe and North America to invest in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production and explained how to produce steel products and grades with EAF technology by managing the raw material mix.
The UK Steel article reported that steelmakers have been mixing different proportions of pig iron or Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in their EAF plants to increase their product range, with significantly positive results. According to SteelRadar, British Steel, one of the largest steelmakers in the UK, has received planning permission for an Electric Arc Furnace at its Teesside plant. The company will supply the Teesside Beam Mill and Skinningrove plants with a 100 mt EAF, 100 mt ladle furnace, 100 mt vacuum degasser and a continuous casting unit.

Meanwhile, British Steel also announced that it has applied to North Lincolnshire Council to build another electric arc furnace at its Scunthrope site and is awaiting a decision. Sources indicate that this facility will include a 130 mt EAF, two 130 mt ladle furnaces, a 130 mt degasser and continuous casting machines. The proposed EAF, which replaces blast furnaces in Scunthorpe and Teesside, is expected to be operational by late 2025.

Sources told SteelRadar that production will continue with the existing furnaces until the EAF, which will replace the blast furnaces, is commissioned.
