Indonesia has greenlit coal production quotas totaling 922.14 million metric tons for the year 2024, according to Bambang Suswantono, a senior official at the mining ministry, as reported on Tuesday. This approved production exceeds the target set for this year, which was 710 million tons.
Indonesia frequently exceeds its annual coal production targets, as evidenced by last year's output reaching a record 775 million tons, surpassing the goal of 695 million tons. Bambang disclosed during a parliament hearing that the quotas were allocated to 587 coal mining companies.
Furthermore, the ministry has sanctioned coal production quotas of 917.16 million tons for 2025 and 902.97 million tons for 2026.
In January, an official stated that Indonesia plans to gradually reduce coal output starting from 2035, with the goal of reaching approximately 250 million tons per year by 2060.
