The appeal was sent to WTO members on Monday, according to an announcement on the organization's website. The WTO had previously ruled in favor of the European Union's complaint that Indonesia's ban on iron ore exports was harming its steel industries.
The dispute began in 2021 when the EU demanded that a panel be set up, saying the Southeast Asian country's requirement for local processing of minerals and its failure to promptly publish the policy was against WTO rules.
Last month, a delegation of WTO experts urged the country, the world's largest metal ore producer, to align its measures with WTO obligations. The decision could jeopardize Indonesia's efforts to move the resource-rich country up the commodity value chain and develop local metal refineries.
