India urges developed countries to become carbon negative by 2050

India wants to encourage developed countries to become carbon negative instead of carbon neutral by 2050.

India urges developed countries to become carbon negative by 2050

India plans to present this proposal at the COP28 climate summit at the end of the year. According to the arguments, if rich countries achieve net-negative emissions before 2050, it will make it possible for the world to reach a net-zero emissions target by 2050, while enabling developing countries to use their natural resources for growth.

Developed countries such as the US, UK, Canada and Japan are on track for net zero targets by 2050. China is aiming for 2060 and India for 2070. India tends to avoid setting a date for a specific fossil fuel phase-out period, preferring instead to focus on "reduction and mitigation technologies" to reduce carbon emissions.

At a G20 summit in New Delhi last month, member countries agreed to a requirement to reduce unabated coal power without setting a specific timeline or emissions reduction targets. This represents progress in climate negotiations among these countries, which account for 80% of global emissions.
