Hyundai Steel and Primetals Technologies partner for blast furnace gas injection study

In recent times, Hyundai Steel in Dangjin, South Korea, commissioned Primetals Technologies to conduct a blast furnace gas injection study. This study will be carried out in two phases.

Hyundai Steel and Primetals Technologies partner for blast furnace gas injection study

The first phase will assess the impact of injecting hydrogen-carrying gases into the furnace through tuyeres on production stability, efficiency, and emission reduction. This process performance study will also examine the effects of the Sequential Impulse Process (SIP) technology on the furnace. SIP technology involves sending high-pressure oxygen pulses to each tuyere in a specific sequence, allowing shock waves to penetrate deeper into the furnace's internal structure. This process burns fine coal deposits, improving coke permeability, leading to increased gas utilization and improved furnace drainage.

The second phase will investigate physical layout options for each technology, including the necessary piping and related capital costs.

Supporting the Green Transition

The completed report aims to ensure the three blast furnaces at Hyundai Steel's Dangjin facility operate in the most environmentally efficient way. This study will contribute to developing a long-term technology roadmap in line with Hyundai's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. By replacing a portion of traditional carbon-based fuels with alternative gas injection, Hyundai Steel aims to reduce CO2 emissions from the blast furnace. This approach will not only enhance the facility's environmental profile but also aims to reduce operating costs by lowering the cost per ton of hot metal and maximizing furnace production.

A Long-Term Partnership

While this marks the first collaboration between Primetals Technologies and Hyundai Steel in blast furnace technologies, the two companies have a long history of joint projects. In early 2024, Hyundai ordered heavy plate mill equipment from Primetals Technologies to increase productivity. Previously, Hyundai significantly reduced maintenance costs by implementing Eco Slide Disks on two hot strip mill down coilers. Additionally, they collaborated on projects such as the design, installation, and commissioning of a large bar mill and a small bar and wire rod mill, completed in 2019.

A Global Player in Steel Production

Hyundai Steel is a leading steel producer worldwide, equipped with both blast furnace and electric arc furnace production facilities. Founded in 1953 as Korea's first steel producer, the company aims to achieve sustainable success by developing its blast furnace operations while maintaining its electric arc furnace operations. Its leading product portfolio in the sector included sheets, plates, structural steel, coils, steel castings, and H-sections for demanding sectors such as automotive, shipbuilding, offshore structures, railways, and construction.
