HyIron has announced that it has produced the first green hydrogen molecules at its plant in Namibia, which began construction in April 2024. The 12 MW system, the largest electrolyzer of its kind in South Africa, operates within a smart microgrid and continues to gradually reach full capacity. This development is seen as an important step towards zero-emission iron production.
The second and third phases of the project will be developed in cooperation with Chinese companies. Together with Jinko, Peric and Sungrow, HyIron is working on new projects to decarbonize shipping, long-distance trucking and rail transportation. These projects are planned to be operational by 2025.
James Mnyupe, Namibia's Presidential Economic Policy Issues Advisor, stated that HyIron has no intention of exporting hydrogen to Germany, but is in talks to export reduced iron directly to Germany and Japan. Mnyupe also stressed that the Namibia Green Hydrogen Program aims to create new trade opportunities for the country's economy.
