The Hybrit project, a product of the partnership between SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall, has resulted in the development of a new hydrogen-based technology for efficient fossil-free iron and steel production with 0.0 tons of CO2 emissions per ton of steel. Additionally, an innovative product called "fossil-free sponge iron" has been developed, which possesses superior properties compared to iron produced through traditional methods.
The pilot facility established in the city of Luleå has produced over 5,000 tons of hydrogen-reduced iron to date. This figure demonstrates that green steel production offers a real and scalable solution.
Fossil-free steel has already been used in the production of famous brand vehicles, heavy machinery, buildings, and consumer products. However, this Hybrit initiative stands out as the world's first project to eliminate fossil fuel use throughout the entire production chain from iron ore to steel. This groundbreaking development is seen as a significant step in the evolution of the steel industry towards a sustainable future.
