Yemen overtakes Israel as top importer of Türkish steel bars in 2023

The rankings reveal the diverse array of countries contributing to Turkey's steel export industry, showcasing its robustness and global reach.

Yemen overtakes Israel as top importer of Türkish steel bars in 2023

Yemen has emerged as the leading importer of Türkish steel bars, surpassing long-standing rival Israel in a significant trade shift. According to 2023 data released by the Turkish Steel Exporters' Association, Yemen secured the top spot by importing 752,166 tons of steel bars from Turkey.

The surge in imports signals a potential boom in Yemen's construction and infrastructure sectors, as the nation seeks to rebuild and develop amidst ongoing challenges.

Israel, which had held the top position for years, now finds itself relegated to second place, with imports totaling 738,372 tons.

War is a significant factor in Israel's decline from the top position in steel imports. Conflict or geopolitical tensions in the region could disrupt trade routes, leading to delays or disruptions in the importation of goods, including steel.
In times of war or heightened security concerns, governments may prioritize other resources or industries over steel imports.
Moreover, the uncertainty and instability associated with wartime conditions deter businesses from engaging in international trade, leading to a decrease in steel imports overall. Therefore it has impacted the country's ability or willingness to import steel in significant quantities.

In addition, Israel's decline in steel imports be attributed to global trade , domestic demand changes, economic conditions, and government policies. Additionally, fluctuations in global steel prices or trade tariffs  have influenced Israel's import decisions, potentially affecting the overall steel volume.

Moving along the rankings, Syria emerged in the eighth position, boasting a substantial export figure of 107,520 tons of Türkish steel bars. Following closely behind, Iraq claimed the 13th spot, with a notable contribution of 60,505 tons. Morocco, securing the 18th rank, demonstrated its significance in Türkiye's steel export market, with a shipment of 37,133 tons. This diverse array of countries underscores the robustness and global reach of Türkiye's steel export industry.
