Founded in 1975, WSD evaluates global steel producers every year in 23 categories, including technological innovation, cost reduction, processing costs, financial stability, customer accessibility and raw material accessibility, and announces their competitiveness rankings. According to these comprehensive evaluations, the ranking of steel giants in 2023 is as follows:
In these evaluations made by WSD, POSCO has been ranked number one among the world's most competitive steel producers for fourteen years. This year, it received a perfect score of 10 in six categories, including technological innovation, processing costs, workforce capacity, mergers and acquisitions, national risk and non-steel industries. Its average score was 8.62. The company was also named Sustainability Champion for two consecutive years by the World Steel Association in April 2023 and was awarded in the "Sustainability" category at the Steelie Awards in October. WSD underlined that POSCO's commitment to sustainability plays an important role in its success.
While US-based Nucor follows this ranking, Luxembourg steel producer ArcelorMittal and Japanese steel producer Nippon Steel took the third place. Chinese steelmaker BaoWu maintained its ranking in 2022 and came fifth in the most competitive steelmaker.
