World coal production hits record in 2022

Global coal production hit a record 8,803.4 million tons in 2022, up 7.9%, according to the Energy Institute's annual world energy review.

The absolute increase in production was 643.9 million tons, the highest figure since 1982.

China, which is responsible for two-thirds of this increase, where coal production increased by 434.2 million tons in 2022, was the country that made the biggest contribution to this growth. But such a transition led to an energy crisis in the country, as a result of which they returned to coal mining. In 2022, China increased its coal mining investment to $96 billion.

There was a significant increase in coal production in India with 98.6 million tons and Indonesia with 73.4 million tons. The increase in coal in India is due to rising energy consumption and the use of liquefied natural gas that has become unaffordable over the past year.

A significant increase was seen in Europe with 20.4 million tons of coal production. The greatest growth was recorded in Germany, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. This is due to the search for an alternative to cheap Russian gas.
