Although Turkey's scrap imports from the EU in the first four months of 2023 decreased by 11.3% y-o-y to 3 million 893 thousand tons, Europe maintained its first place as the region to which Turkey exported the most scrap.

The US and the UK followed the EU with approximately 1,258,000 tons and 626,142 tons

In January-April 2023 period, scrap imports from Europe, the US and the UK decreased by 11.3%, 8.9% and 9.3%, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year.

CIS scrap exports to Turkey fell sharply compared to January-April last year

Due to the intense war between Russia and Ukraine, CIS scrap exports to Turkey have almost disappeared. More than a thousand companies withdrew from Russia and Belarus in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Turkey's iron and steel sector was also affected. Since Turkey was affected by such situations, it decided that we should produce our own steel. After this decision, there was a demand for scrap imports from other countries.

According to statistics, Turkey's scrap imports from the CIS ranked 3rd in the first four months of last year with 705 thousand 232 tons, while in the January-April period of this year, it fell 97% to 7th place.

In January-April 2022, Turkey's scrap imports from Latin America ranked 5th with 540 thousand 267 tons, while there was a sharp decline to 199 thousand 820 tons compared to the first four months of this year.

On the other hand, while Latin America ranked 5th in the January-April period last year, it dropped to 6th place in the first four months of this year.

This decrease is not a coincidence. In July 2022, the allegation of "All of Turkey may be poisoned" emerged.

There was a reaction to the permission given for the dismantling of the Nae Sao Paulo ship, which allegedly carried 600 tons of asbestos in the scrap coming to Aliağa Port in the scrap exports of Brazil, one of the Latin American countries, to Turkey.

For these reasons, it was a sharp decision to reduce scrap imports from Latin America in order to prevent life-threatening hazards and to prevent political turmoil.
