The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) published global crude steel data for September. Accordingly, Türkiye's crude steel production in September increased by 8.4% compared to the same month of the previous year and decreased by 7.14% compared to the previous month, reaching 2.9 million tonnes. Looking at the January-September period, crude steel production in the January-September period of 2023 decreased by 10.1% to 24.5 million tonnes compared to the same period of 2022.
In the countries producing the most steel;
China's crude steel production decreased by 5.6% to 82.1 million tonnes in September this year compared to the same period last year. Total production in the January-September period increased by 1.7% compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 795.1 million tonnes.
India increased its September production by 18.2% to 11.6 million tonnes compared to September last year. In addition, India's crude steel production in the January-September period of 2023 increased by 11.6% to 104.1 million tonnes.
The US, on the other hand, increased its September crude steel production by 2.6% to 6.7 million tonnes. In the January-September period, crude steel production decreased by 1.4% compared to 2022. Thus, the production amount was 60.6 million tonnes.
Russia's crude steel production in September increased by 9.8% to 6.2 million tonnes. In the 9-month period of 2023, it increased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 57.1 million tonnes.
The highest increase in South Korea and India
South Korea ranked among the countries with the highest increase in production in September, increasing its production by 18.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and producing 5.5 million tonnes. In the first 9 months of this year, production decreased by 0.4% to 50.4 million tonnes.
Germany's crude steel production in September 2023 increased by 2.1% compared to the same month last year and amounted to 2.9 million tonnes. There was a decrease in the total production amount. Crude steel production in the January-September period of this year decreased by 3.6% compared to last year and amounted to 27.2 million tonnes.
While Brazil was among the countries with decreasing production in September, crude steel production in September decreased by 5.6% to 2.6 million tonnes compared to the same period last year. This decrease continued throughout the year. 2023 January-September production decreased by 8% to 24 million tonnes.
The highest decrease was in Iran
Iran is the country with the highest decrease in production. According to September data, crude steel production decreased by 12.7% y-o-y to 2.4 million tonnes. In the 9-month period, it decreased by 0.6% compared to last year to 22.1 million tonnes.
