Vulcan Green Steel: Oman's hydrogen-powered steel plant underway

In a significant step towards sustainable industrial development, Oman has officially initiated the construction of a pioneering green steel plant. This groundbreaking project marks Oman's commitment to environmentally conscious practices in the steel industry, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and embrace cleaner technologies.

The Vulcan Green Steel (VGS) plant, now under construction in Oman's Duqm special economic zone, marks a significant milestone as the country's inaugural facility utilizing hydrogen as a key raw material for direct reduced iron production. With a hefty investment exceeding $3 billion, the project anticipates an annual output of 5 million tons of environmentally friendly "green" steel.

Additionally, the plant will feature two production lines, each with a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, involved in the manufacturing of direct reduced iron, electric arc furnace, and hot rolling mill. The plant is scheduled for completion in 2026, with production set to commence in 2027.
