Voestalpine invests in sustainable steel production

The Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine has announced the closure of its No. 6 blast furnace in Linz for an 80-day overhaul. The comprehensive repair, which includes a EUR 30 million investment, aims to modernize the furnace. Once the overhaul is complete, a similar maintenance process will be carried out on the blast furnace in Donawitz.

Voestalpine invests in sustainable steel production

Voestalpine has stated that this modernization project is part of its strategy to integrate green technologies into steel production. The company announced plans to transition to a more sustainable production process in the coming years, with a focus on utilizing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technologies. The No. 6 blast furnace in Linz is expected to remain operational until at least 2035.

These investments are seen as a significant step toward Voestalpine's environmentally friendly production goals. When announcing its first quarter results for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the company highlighted a EUR 300 million loan received from the European Investment Bank to support the development of green steel production. Voestalpine is actively pursuing its green transformation strategy, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions  by 30% until 2029.

Voestalpine's modernization of its blast furnaces is considered a crucial step towards achieving its sustainability goals and future strategies. Investments in green steel production and the secured loan from the European Investment Bank reflect a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation.
