Veysel Yayan, Secretary General of the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD), made evaluations regarding the opening of a dumping investigation in the steel sector.
Yayan, commenting on the performance of the iron and steel sector in 2022, said that the manufacturing industry is doing well, but the contraction has been observed mainly in the construction sector for the last 5 years.
Since August, energy costs in particular have increased by 50 percent and the decline in production is over 20 percent, Yayan said, noting that the reflection of this development on exports is in the form of a decline of 41 percent.
“We have a dumping operation for Far Eastern countries”
Yayan, who made an assessment about dumping practices in the steel sector, used the following statements:
“Just as the EU and the US are applying protection measures against us, we need to conclude these investigations quickly against countries coming to Turkey at dumped prices in this way and seriously evaluate the application of the instrument of protection measures. The dumping investigation needs to be opened. We have a dumping investigation study, especially for the Far Eastern countries. We will be trying to finalize this quickly in the coming months. Because in this way, you cannot export to any country in the world in increments of 600-700 percent by waving your hand. It is not an appropriate approach for them to suddenly put the industry we have established in a position where it cannot stand.”
Referring to the plans of the EU and the USA to impose new customs duties on steel and aluminum imported from China, Yayan said that as the Turkish steel sector, they sincerely believe in the decarbonization of the world and are taking measures to do so. Stating that the steel sector in Turkey is currently producing greener production compared to the EU's steel sector, Yayan stated that the EU and the United States are “chipping away at themselves” while working on decarbonization.
