Within the framework of the agreement, the performance of steels produced under ArcelorMittal's XCarb® brand has been tested and verified. XCarb® steel is produced using at least 75 % recycled material and 100 % renewable electricity. The process is carried out at an ArcelorMittal plant in northern Spain using electric arc furnaces fuelled by renewable energy sources.
VELUX Group plans to use XCarb® steel in its skylight components by 2025, gradually increasing the supply of these steels by 2023. It is stated that 5.7 % of the company's total scope 3 emissions are caused by metals formed by steel.
VELUX Group's goal is to decrease its scope 3 upstream emissions by 50 % by 2030. While VELUX's commitments in the field of sustainability emphasise the importance of cooperation between companies, this long-term agreement with ArcelorMittal stands out as an important step in decarbonisation efforts.
VELUX Group, with its skylights and related products, has been aiming to brighten and make people's living spaces healthier for more than 80 years around the world. Operating in 37 countries globally, the company continues to work with 11,900 employees with the aim of creating sustainable living spaces.
ArcelorMittal officials stated that this partnership contributes to the decarbonisation of materials used in daily life and expressed their appreciation for VELUX's commitment to using low carbon emission steel. Steel continues to be one of the cornerstones of VELUX's overall carbon footprint reduction targets.
