Vallourec's Düsseldorf-Rath plant produced its last pipe last Thursday. Thus, Vallourec's pipe operations in Germany, which it took over from Mannesmann in 2005, came to an end. The plant in Mülheim an der Ruhr had stopped production earlier this month.
The factories began production in the late 19th century under the Mannesmannröhren-Werke (MRW) brand. Following the break-up of the traditional Mannesmann group in the early 2000s, Vallourec took over four pipe mills, two of which had already been closed. It started looking for a buyer for the remaining two plants in late 2021, but decided to close them six months later. Together, the two plants employed 2,200 people.
Other German pipe mills operating under the Mannesmann/MRW brand at the time were acquired by Salzgitter AG and are still in operation.
