Vale and Midrex expand collaboration on iron ore briquette technology

Vale and Midrex Technologies are advancing a technical collaboration to utilize iron ore briquettes in steel manufacturing, aiming to enhance production efficiency and reduce carbondioxide emissions.

Vale and Midrex expand collaboration on iron ore briquette technology

Vale, a major player in the global mining industry, and Midrex Technologies have intensified their collaboration with a new technical cooperation agreement focusing on the application of iron ore briquettes in steel manufacturing. This partnership aims to refine Vale's innovative briquetting technology, which processes iron ore using a binder solution at low temperatures to produce superior quality sinter, suitable for direct reduction plants.

The collaboration has already yielded promising initial results, demonstrating the potential effectiveness of these briquettes in the direct reduction process. The technology is noteworthy for its potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, offering an 80% reduction compared to traditional iron ore processing methods. Following successful trials at Midrex facilities, the companies are contemplating the establishment of a joint venture to market this technology and its associated equipment.

The move could potentially transform steel production, providing a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional iron ore pellets used in most direct reduction plants. The next steps include further testing and evaluation to confirm the feasibility and operational benefits of implementing this technology on a larger scale.
