Compared to 2 million 904 thousand tons in January, there was a 26.4% decrease in February. Likewise, while final steel imports were recorded as 3 million 72 thousand tons in January, this figure decreased by 30.4% to 2 million 137 thousand tons in February.
Final steel import permit applications were recorded as 1 million 566 thousand tons in February. Compared to 2 million 307 thousand tons of finished steel imports in January, there was a 32.1% decrease in February. However, total steel imports in the first two months of 2025 increased by 3.8% compared to the same period of 2024 and reached 5 million 209 thousand tons. In the same period, finished steel imports increased by 5.8% to 3 million 874 thousand tons.
Some Steel Products See Increase
Significant import increases were observed in some steel products in February.
Imports of electrical sheet and strip increased by 135% compared to January and reached 18 thousand tons. Imports of standard rails increased by 77% to 33 thousand tons, while imports of electrolytic galvanized sheet and strip increased by 77% to 36 thousand tons. Imports of ingots and steel for castings increased by 52% to 60 thousand tons, while imports of tool steel increased by 25% to 17 thousand tons.
Imports of some products also saw notable increases in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2024. Tin plate imports increased by 101% to 113 thousand tons. Line pipe imports increased by 60% to 156 thousand tons. Imports of reinforcing bars increased by 50% to 326 thousand tons. Wire rod imports increased by 29% to 253 thousand tons. Imports of plate in coil increased by 24% to 536 thousand tons.
Canada, Brazil and Mexico Are the Largest Steel Suppliers
The largest steel import permit applications in February came from Canada.
Import permit applications from Brazil decreased by 30% to 412 thousand tons, while applications from Mexico decreased by 36% to 303 thousand tons. Applications from South Korea decreased by 41% to 194 thousand tons, while import permit applications from Japan increased by 10% to 107 thousand tons.
Canada ranked first among the largest steel suppliers to the US in the first two months of 2025. Steel imports from Canada were recorded at 1,103,000 tons, a decrease of 5% compared to 2024. Imports from Brazil increased by 2% to 998 thousand tons. Imports from Mexico increased by 7% to 775 thousand tons.
