Giants Honda, US Steel and Toyota led the way with gains of 4.1%, 3.7% and 3.2% respectively.
Nucor and Regions were up 2.3% and 0.8% respectively.
Warrior Met Coal and Community Health Systems were the worst performers, down 3.8% and 3.5% respectively.
Overall, US equities lost ground on Tuesday while yields rose as Wall Street awaited the Fed's latest decision on interest rates.
The S&P 500 index fell 9.58 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 4,443.95. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 106.57, or 0.3 per cent, to 34,517.73, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 32.05, or 0.2 per cent, to 13,678.19.
