The data also highlights a 4.5% increase in rolled steel product imports, totalling 2.09 million tons. However, the import volume for galvanized steel decreased by 9.3%, amounting to 259.36 thousand tons.
From January to April 2024, overall steel imports amounted to 10.34 million tons, a 4.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, rolled steel products saw a growth of 2.2% year-over-year, reaching 7.59 million tons. Galvanized steel, often used in construction and automotive industries for its corrosion resistance, experienced a notable increase of 38.2% year-over-year, with imports totalling nearly 996 thousand tons.
The major contributors to U.S. steel imports during this period were Canada, Brazil, and Mexico. These countries supplied 2.35 million tons, 1.75 million tons, and 1.43 million tons respectively.
This increase in imports contrasts sharply with the overall decline seen in 2023, where high import tariffs and economic challenges led to a 8.7% decrease in steel imports, amounting to 28.15 million tons.
