The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced import data for March 2025. According to the report, total steel imports in the US totaled 2.5 million tons in March, an increase of 11.4% compared to February. In the same period, finished steel imports increased by 11.9% to 1.8 million tons.
In the first three months of the year, total steel imports increased by 3.6% and finished steel imports by 1.6% compared to last year. In the April 2024-March 2025 period, total imports increased by 3.4% and finished steel imports by 4.1%. In March, the market share of finished steel imports was estimated at around 21%, while it has risen to 22% year to date.
Among the products with notable increases in imports in March were ribbed rebar (86%), line pipe (48%), oil pipes (41%), other metal coated sheets (40%) and lastly cold rolled sheets (23%).
In the same period, the largest supplier of the US was Canada with 495 thousand tons. Canada was followed by Brazil with 429 thousand tons, Mexico with 389 thousand tons, South Korea with 253 thousand tons and Taiwan with 117 thousand tons. In the 12-month period between April 2024 and March 2025, Vietnam stood out as one of the notable suppliers with an increase of 87%.
