US scrap exports decreased in 2023!

According to SteelRadar's data sourced from the UN Comtrade Database, in 2023, the United States witnessed a decrease in scrap exports, totaling 16,082,648 tons, marking a 7.2% decline from 2022 when exports stood at 17,303,341 tons. Notably, May 2023 saw a significant y-o-y increase, with exports reaching 1,959,640 tons, reflecting a notable 21% rise compared to the same period in the previous year. However, July 2023 experienced a y-o-y decline of 25%, with exports dropping to 931,744 tons.

Turkey emerged as the primary destination for US steel scrap exports, holding the largest share with around 3,043,011 tons. This underscores Turkey's status as one of the leading countries in both scrap consumption and import, largely due to its electric steelmaking capacity within the domestic steel sector. Mexico followed closely with 3,063,709 tons, albeit experiencing a decline compared to 2022. Other significant export destinations included India with 1,695,695 tons and Bangladesh with 1,444,764 tons.
