The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that total US steel imports in February 2025 amounted to 2,235,000 net tons (NT). This represents a 27.2% decrease compared to January 2025. In February, finished steel imports totaled 1,623,000 net tons (NT), a 29.6% decrease from January.
In the first two months of 2025, total steel imports increased by 5.7%, while finished steel imports increased by 7.4%. In the 12-month period between March 2024 and February 2025, total steel imports increased by 3.1%, while finished steel imports increased by 5.4%.
The steel product with the largest increase in imports in February was cut-to-length plates, with an increase of 19%. On the other hand, imports of tin plate increased by 55%, while imports of all other metallic coated sheets and strips increased by 33%. At the same time, imports of hot-dip galvanized sheets and strips were increased 28%, wire rods increased 24% and cold-rolled sheets increased 22%.
The largest suppliers of steel imports to the US in February were Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Japan. Imports from Canada decreased by 26% to 481,000 tons, while imports from Brazil decreased by 24% to 445,000 tons. Imports from Mexico decreased by 41% to 279,000 tons. Imports from South Korea decreased by 41% to 194,000 tons, while imports from Japan increased by 18% to 114,000 tons.
In the 12-month period between March 2024 and February 2025, imports from Canada decreased by 6% to 6,523,000 tons. Imports from Brazil increased by 9% to 4,555,000 tons, while imports from Mexico fell by 13% to 3,545,000 tons. Imports from South Korea increased by 11% to 2,948,000 tons. Imports from Vietnam increased by 103% to 1,298,000 tons.
