In March 2023, Ukrainian rolled products production increased by 29.9% compared to the previous month – to 434 thousand tons.
Steel production for the month was 527,000 tons, which is 24.3% more month-on-month.
March 2023 saw a rise in the output of rolled products of 69.5%, steel smelting of 116.9%, and pig iron of 112.8% as compared to March 2022.
Ukrainian steelmakers produced 1.02 million tons of rolled products in the first quarter of 2023, which is 67.9% less than they did during the corresponding time in 2022. Pig iron output decreased by 65.7% y/y to 1.2 million tons in 3 months, while steel production fell by 66.2% y/y to 1.23 million tons.
The conflict-related destruction of the two biggest steel companies in Ukraine, Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol, as well as logistical issues, are all factors contributing to the low production levels of Ukrainian steelmakers.
