Ukraine's long product imports in April were dominated by Türkiye

According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, imports of long products to Ukraine increased by 57,6% in April.

April 2024 is characterised by a significant increase in imports of long products to Ukraine compared to the previous month, especially angles, shapes and special profiles of non-alloy steel. Türkiye remains the main supplier of these products.
In April 2024, Ukrainian consumers imported 13.3 thousand tonnes of long products, up 57.6% compared to the previous month. However, compared to April 2023, imports fell by 19%.
Expenditures on imported products in April 2024 increased by 34.3% compared to March 2024, but fell by 13.9% compared to April 2023.
In January-April 2024, Ukraine's imports of long steel products increased by 9.9% compared to 2023 to 39.1 thousand tonnes. In monetary terms, import shipments increased by 6 % year-on-year to $44.48 million.

The bulk of imports were angles, shapes and special profiles of non-alloy steel in the amount of 19.71 thousand tonnes worth $16.95 million. Supplies of these products to Ukraine in April increased by 54.7% compared to March and by 32% compared to April last year. The most important supplier of angle iron, shapes and special profiles was Türkiye, which accounted for 61.4% of deliveries in monetary terms.

Imports of other unprocessed carbon steel rods and bars (UKTBVED 7214) to Ukraine in April 2024 showed a significant increase compared to the previous month, but decreased on an annual basis. Ukraine imported 7.45 thousand tonnes of other unprocessed carbon steel rods and bars worth $7.03 million in January-April 2024. In April, imports increased by 121.5% compared to March to 2.78 thousand tonnes, while compared to April last year they decreased by 67.4%. The amount paid for these products in April was $2.44 million, up 33.7% from March and down 64.3% from April last year. Turkish producers supplied 62.6% of the relevant products to the Ukrainian market.

Imports of other rods and bars of other alloy steels (UKTBVED 7228) in April amounted to 1.02 thousand tonnes (up 42.2% m/m, down 9.8% y/y) worth $ 1.58 million (up 49.1% m/m, down 5.9% y/y). Türkiye accounted for 30.4% of imports of these products.

These three types of long products accounted for more than 79% of total imports of related products to Ukraine. Other suppliers of these products include Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, India, China, Malaysia and others.
