British steelmakers faced carbon costs of around £12 billion last year, which dealt a serious blow to the competitiveness of their products. That's why the UK government is starting to consider a range of possible measures to ensure that imported steel and domestic steel have the same carbon footprint.
The government has begun to develop the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and related policy measures, including measures aimed at developing markets for low-carbon products, further reducing the risk of future carbon leakage, and providing the best policy environment for domestic industry.
