The council brings together industry leaders, such as the CEOs of Tata Steel and British Steel and the Ministry of Defense's Sheffield Forgemasters. The Government plans to revitalize the UK steel industry, look after the needs of workers and local communities and provide up investment of GBP 2.5 billion.
Open for business on January 7, 2025, the council will make a significant contribution to the restructuring of the steel industry. The government emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the growth and sustainability of the steel industry, and says it is in the process of developing the policies needed to overcome the crises of the past.
Gareth Stace, Managing Director of UK Steel, described the establishment of the council as “a defining moment for the future of steelmaking in the UK” and emphasized that it was “an important step towards creating a comprehensive Government Steel Strategy that will lay the foundations for a sustainable and resilient industry”.
