UAE and Japanese companies plan to build low-carbon steelmaking plant

UAE and Japan-based companies will build a complex to produce low-carbon steel.

UAE and Japanese companies plan to build low-carbon steelmaking plant

Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) signed a preliminary agreement with Emirates Steel (ESI), Japan's JFE Steel, and ITOCHU Corporation to build a steelmaking complex composed of pellet plants, direct-reduction plants, smelter furnaces, and other related infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, for a low-carbon supply chain of steelmaking raw materials

ESI will use natural gas to reduce high grade iron ore supplied by ITOCHU directly to ferrous materials for steelmaking. The material produced will be supplied to JFE Steel and other steel mills.

The project in question is planned to start ferrous material production in the second half of April 2025 - March 26.
