Türkiye’s slab imports reached 336,385 tons in September, marking a y-o-y increase of 74% and an 11% rise from August. The average import price was recorded at USD 507 per ton, with Russia and Indonesia as the main suppliers.
Russia provided the largest portion of Türkiye’s imports, supplying 152,529 tons in September, accounting for 45% of total imports. Although this represents a 33% annual increase, Russia’s share has fallen from 59% in September 2023, with volumes remaining stable compared to August levels. Indonesia followed closely as the second-largest supplier, delivering 103,788 tons and holding a 31% market share.
Malaysia also expanded its presence, supplying 36,157 tons and securing an 11% market share, marking a 33% rise from the previous year. Algeria, a newer entrant in Türkiye’s slab market since August, contributed 8% of imports in September, with regular shipments expected from Tosyalı Algeria to meet domestic production needs. The remaining imports were supplemented by Oman, which accounted for 5% of September's slab intake, despite being a non-slab-producing nation.
Over the first nine months of 2024, Türkiye’s total slab imports surged by 37% y-o-y, reaching 2,783,993 tons—surpassing the total volume for all of 2023, which stood at 2,718,018 tons. Russia held its position as Türkiye’s top supplier, though its market share fell sharply to 38% from 61% in the same period last year. Malaysia, on the other hand, tripled its slab imports to 1,005,653 tons, approaching Russia's levels and becoming a major player in Türkiye’s slab supply.
Indonesia has also strengthened its position, supplying 234,038 tons so far in 2024, an increase of 188% y-o-y, capturing 8% of Türkiye’s slab market. Other suppliers have expanded their presence as well. Saudi Arabia contributed 151,705 tons between January and September, making up 5% of Türkiye’s imports for the period, while Vietnam nearly doubled its supply, reaching 101,131 tons for a 4% share. Algeria, as a new supplier since August, delivered 50,626 tons year-to-date, representing 2% of imports. Smaller quantities were imported from India and Libya, totaling 25,394 tons and 22,878 tons, respectively.
