Türkiye's Ports Set All-Time Monthly Cargo Handling Record

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that the amount of cargo handled at Turkish ports in January 2025 reached 48 million 626 thousand 513 tons, setting the highest monthly level of all-time.

In his written statement, Minister Uraloğlu stated that this figure represented a 12.8% increase compared to the same period last year. The number of containers handled in January also saw a 14% year-on-year increase, reaching 1 million 155 thousand 514 TEUs. 

International Cargo Shipments Reached 37.4 Million Tons 

In January, the amount of cargo shipped abroad increased by 5.3% compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 11 million 792 thousand 496 tons. The amount of cargo arriving from abroad to Turkish ports increased by 16.3%, reaching 25 million 625 thousand 502 tons. Thus, total international cargo shipments in January increased by 12.6%, totaling 37 million 417 thousand 998 tons. 

Aliağa, Kocaeli, and İskenderun are in the Top Three 

Among the regional port authorities, the highest cargo handling occurred at Aliağa Regional Port Authority with 7 million 724 thousand 97 tons. Kocaeli Regional Port Authority handled 7 million 714 thousand 380 tons, and İskenderun Regional Port Authority handled 6 million 589 thousand 317 tons, ranking in the top positions. 

In January, transit cargo transported by sea increased by 12.3%, reaching 5 million 833 thousand 4 tons, while cargo transported in cabotage services increased by 14.6%, reaching 5 million 375 thousand 511 tons. 

Lump Charcoal is on Top of the List 

In terms of cargo types, the highest increase was seen in lump charcoal. In January, 3 million 178 thousand 643 tons of lump charcoal were handled. 

The most exported cargo from the ports was portland cement, with 886 thousand 263 tons. Portland cement was followed by diesel and clinker. For imports, the top cargo types coming into Türkiye were lump charcoal, followed by crude oil and LNG. 

Most Cargo Came from Russia 

In January, the most cargo came to Türkiye from Russia, while the highest export shipments were made to Italy. Italy was followed by the USA and Spain. 

Turkish-flagged ships handled 7.2% of the total 37 million 417 thousand 998 tons of international cargo shipments. The amount of cargo transported abroad by Turkish-flagged ships increased by 14.3%, reaching 2 million 708 thousand 146 tons, while cargo transported by foreign-flagged ships increased by 12.5%, reaching 34 million 709 thousand 852 tons.
