Türkiye's carbon-free target in steel production: Hydrogen use

SHURA Energy Transition Center's report “Renewable Hydrogen: Priority Application Areas and Policy Recommendations” report published by SHURA Energy Transformation Center, revealed the critical role of renewable hydrogen in Türkiye's decarbonization process. In particular, the iron and steel sector stands out as one of the priority areas for hydrogen use.

Türkiye's carbon-free target in steel production: Hydrogen use

According to the report, between 2025 and 2053, the use of renewable hydrogen in the iron and steel sector could generate $9.5 billion in economic benefits and reduce 85.8 million tons of carbon emissions. The use of hydrogen will significantly reduce the industry's carbon footprint by replacing fossil fuels in high-temperature processes.

SHURA Energy Transformation Center states that in order to accelerate the decarbonization of the iron and steel sector, the technical infrastructure for hydrogen production and use should be strengthened, incentive mechanisms should be created and public-private sector cooperation should be developed.

As one of Türkiye's largest industries, the iron and steel sector can gain economic advantage and increase its competitiveness in the global green steel market if it adopts renewable hydrogen technologies and transitions to a sustainable production model.
