According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, in May 2024, Ukraine imported 17,4 thousand tonnes of long steel products, which is 30,8% more than the previous month and 21,6% more than in May 2023. Türkiye remains the main supplier of products. May product import expenditures totalled USD 15,97 million, up 12,8% from April and 6,4% from the same month last year.
In the first five months of 2024, Ukraine's total imports of long products reached 56,5 thousand tonnes, up 13,2% compared to the same period in 2023. In monetary terms, imports increased by 6,1% to 60,4 million USD.
Angles, shaped and special sections made of non-alloy steel accounted for the bulk of imports. In May 2024, their imports increased by 10,8% compared to April and 29,1% compared to May last year, reaching 27,47 thousand tonnes valued at USD 23,15 million. Türkiye supplied 63,7% of shipments of these products in monetary terms.
Ukrainian consumers also imported 11,53 thousand tonnes of other unprocessed carbon steel bars and iron worth USD 9,81 million between January and May. Imports in May increased by 46,3% compared to April and amounted to 4,07 thousand tonnes, while compared to May last year they decreased by 17,4%. The import cost paid for these products was $2,78 million, up 13,8 % from April, but down 29,5 % from a year earlier. Türkiye accounted for 70,7 % of these imports.
In the first five months of 2024, imports of other alloy steel bars and rods were 4,84 thousand tonnes valued at USD 7,63 million. In May, imports of these products decreased by 5,1% compared to April and by 43,4% compared to May last year to 0,96 thousand tonnes. The value of imports in May was $1,57 million, down 1,1% compared to April and 39% compared to last year. Türkiye supplied 30,1% of these products.
These three types of long products accounted for more than 77% of Ukraine's total imports of these products. Other suppliers include Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, India, China, Malaysia and other countries.
