Turkish steelmakers lose their competitiveness in the USA market

The United States and Britain have reached an agreement that eases tariffs and tariffs on steel and aluminum trade. The USA had previously made a similar agreement with the European Union (EU) and Japan. The easing of tariffs, called “Trump taxes”, broke the competitiveness of the Turkish steel industry in the US market.

Turkish steelmakers lose their competitiveness in the USA market

The US administration announced that it has reached an agreement with the UK to ease tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. Evaluating the effect of the USA's reduction in steel and aluminum taxes from the UK, the steelmakers state that "tax-exempt countries gain competitive advantage by gaining an advantage against Turkey, and this situation causes Turkish exporters to lose their competitiveness in the US market". The comments of the steelmakers on how the US-England agreement will affect Turkey are as follows:

“US market is shrinking for Turkish companies.”
The USA first reached an agreement with the European Union (EU) and Japan regarding the customs duty on steel and aluminum products, which has been going on since 2018, and it was decided to reduce the tariffs. Finally, the USA made an agreement with the UK. The US Commerce Department said in a statement that "with the agreement, the UK will allow the UK to ship to the US in 'historically-based sustainable volumes' of steel and aluminum products, without the Trump-era taxes."

"US agreements violate WTO rules"
Ugur Dalbeler, Vice President of the Steel Exporters' Association, evaluating the impact of the USA's regulation on steel and aluminum taxes from England to the WORLD, said, “As each additional producer gains strength in competition by gaining an advantage against Turkey, our power in that market decreases, our market share. shrinking,” he said. Dalbeler noted that during the meetings held in the USA in February on behalf of the industry, the US side stated that "there will be no tax reductions for any other country" and added, "These mutual agreements are absolutely against the WTO rules. In addition, a new order is being created and the rich are excluding us while they are creating free trade areas among themselves. This new order will cause the WTO to completely lose its function and cause a great injustice in world trade.

British steel will enter the US duty-free
The agreement between the two countries allows the US to import 500,000 metric tons of steel from the UK duty-free. It is stated that the agreement will enter into force as of 1 June 2022. In 2018, the USA decided to impose tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent on imported steel and aluminum, respectively, on the grounds of "national security". In October 2021, the USA reached a compromise in the dispute with the EU on steel and aluminum taxes, and in February it reached an agreement with Japan.
