The Automotive Industry Association (OSD) has published sectoral data for the January-May period of 2024. According to these data, total automotive production decreased by 2% compared to the same period of the previous year and fell to 606,905 units in the first five months of the year. During this period, automobile production increased by 1% and reached 391,932 units. When tractor production is also included, total production increased to 629,449 units. In the first five months, commercial vehicle production decreased by 7%, heavy commercial vehicle production by 12% and light commercial vehicle production by 6%.
In the January-May period of 2024, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 75%. According to vehicle groups, capacity utilization rates were 75% in light vehicles (cars and light commercial vehicles), 82% in the truck group, 60% in the bus-midibus group and 72% in tractors.
Automotive exports increased by 1% in the first five months of the year and amounted to 417,826 units. While automobile exports increased by 2%, commercial vehicle exports decreased by 2%. Tractor exports decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year, falling to 7,289 units.
Became the leader of the sector
According to data published by the Turkish Exporters Assembly, the automotive sector achieved the highest exports in the first five months of 2024 with 16%. According to data from the Uludağ Exporters' Association (UIB), total automotive exports increased by 3% in the first five months of the year, reaching 15.1 billion dollars. Exports in Euro terms increased by 2% to 13.8 billion Euros. During this period, main industry exports increased by 3% in dollar terms, while supply industry exports increased by 4%.
Sales figures approaching half a million
In the first five months of 2024, the total market increased by 5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 491,482 units. During this period, the automobile market increased by 10% to 375,097 units. When we look at the commercial vehicle market, there was an 8% decrease in the total commercial vehicle market, a 7% decrease in the heavy commercial vehicle market and an 8% decrease in the light commercial vehicle market in the first five months of the year. In the January-May period of 2024, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was recorded as 31% and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was recorded as 33%.
