Turkey produced 2 million 600 thousand tons of crude steel in January, according to the first quarter data of the Turkish Steel Producers Association for crude steel production in 2023.
Turkey's crude steel production decreased by 28.9 percent in February compared to the same month last year and by 19.23 percent compared to January to 2.1 million tons due to the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras.
The Iskenderun and Osmaniye region, which accounts for 32 percent of Turkey's steel production capacity, suffered serious damage. However, the region recovered in a short time. Factories gradually started production.
Turkish steel production increased by 28.57% in March, amounting to 2 million 700 thousand tons. With this figure, Turkey's crude steel production reached the same level as in September and December 2022.
Turkey's steel mills, which rapidly increased their production capacities to meet the steel demand arising from the earthquake, realized the highest increase in March by increasing crude steel production figures by 3.85% compared to January and 28.57% compared to February.
However, the restoration and construction works postponed due to the elections and the weakening of global markets and export demand brought demand to a standstill in April, contrary to expectations. It is felt that the iron and steel sector had to shift its expectations to the second half of the year.
