Trump, who has recently made contradictory statements on tariffs, stated in a post on social media that tariffs will be applied to Mexico and Canada as of this date.
Trump also stated that additional 10% tariffs on China will start on March 4. It was announced that the reciprocal tariffs will come into effect on April 2, 2025.
Previously, Trump had decided to postpone tariffs on Mexico and Canada for a month. However, this postponement expires on March 4 and the date of the tariffs has been finalized.
Trump had also made contradictory statements about tariffs on the European Union in his previous statements. At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada would start on March 4. At first, Trump responded, “I'm not stopping the tariffs,” but then stated that these tariffs would be implemented on April 2.
In a statement released by the White House, it was reported that the tariffs on Canada and Mexico will be effective as of March 4 and that Trump has not yet decided on a new postponement. It was also stated that a report on reciprocal tariffs will be published in early April and that these tariffs may also affect Canada and Mexico, but that Trump's planned tariffs on drug trafficking and illegal immigration will be evaluated in a different framework.
