Trump on the impact of tariffs on recession

US President Donald Trump, when asked whether a recession is expected this year due to the impact of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, stated that he “hates” to make such predictions.

Trump on the impact of tariffs on recession

“There is a transition period right now because what we are doing is so big. We are bringing wealth back to America,” Trump stated, adding that these processes may take time.

Tariffs and Inflation Relationship

Addressing the question of whether the tariffs would fuel inflation, Trump emphasized that tariffs could affect inflation, but that interest rates were also falling. The US President said the suspension of tariffs on Mexico and Canada until April was to help automakers and that after April 2, everything will be “reciprocal”.

Tensions with Democrats

Trump criticized the Democrats' reaction to his speech in Congress with written protests, saying, “I don't believe it. They were talking about men playing in women's sports. Republicans were going crazy and Democrats were holding up their little signs. It's unbelievable. They don't understand,” he noted.

Criticism of Aid to Ukraine

Criticizing the US aid to Ukraine, Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received weapons from the US “like candy from a baby”. He also added that the United States has some weaknesses with Russia, signaling that Ukraine may not be able to stand up to Russia.

Comments on Russia, China and Panama

Trump said that no one had been as tough on Russia as he was and that he had stopped the Nord Stream 2 pipeline during his previous presidency. He also stated that he has established good relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump also made statements about the Panama Canal, arguing that the canal was “given to Panama for no reason” and emphasized that they would take it back.

Golden Card and Social Security Reform

Trump stated that he would not touch social security programs such as Medicaid, which provides health care for low-income individuals, and Medicare, health insurance for the elderly, but said he would end “corruption” in these programs. He also noted that companies like Apple could get a “golden card” for USD 5 million to hire foreign labor. He stated that this card would be more advantageous than the green card.

Criticism and Corruption Accusations

Trump claimed that Elon Musk had uncovered “sham contracts” under former President Joe Biden. He also stated that there was excessive spending on “trans rat surgeries” under the Biden administration and associated this issue with corruption.
