Trump calls steel and aluminum tariffs critical to US survival

US President Donald Trump, in his speech before the US Congress, spoke about the achievements and future goals of his administration. “We have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplish in four or eight years, and we are just getting started,” Trump stated, emphasizing that they have achieved great successes in the first 43 days of his presidency.

The President highlighted the importance of the 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, emphasizing that the decision was critical to the security of the United States, stating, “If we don't have steel, we don't have an army, and frankly, we don't have a country.” Trump emphasized that the tariffs play a major role not only economically, but also in terms of national security.

Trump pointed to the example of steelworker Jeff Denard, saying the tariffs serve the purpose of protecting the American workforce and the spirit of the country. “Jeff was a steelworker for 27 years and a volunteer firefighter. He raised 7 children and fostered more than 40 children. Stories like Jeff's remind us that tariffs are about protecting not only American jobs, but also the soul of our country,” Trump stated.

Trump announced that the US would impose “reciprocal tariffs” and summarized the new tariff system by announcing that “we will tax them the way they tax us.” This week, the Trump administration imposed high tariffs against Mexico and Canada. These countries retaliated by raising their own tariffs. While economists warn that this could turn into a full-scale trade war, Trump insists that this policy will boost the US economy.

Trump also addressed the current state of the US economy, stating that one of his priorities is to “save the economy” and provide “relief” to American families. Blaming the previous administration for the economic problems, Trump claimed that the Joe Biden era created “an economic disaster and inflation nightmare”. “I am fighting every day to make America livable again,” Trump promised, pledging to reverse the economic recession and lower costs for the working class.
