TOSYALI SULB agrees with Midrex and SMS for DRI complex in Libya

TOSYALI SULB Steel Industries, a joint venture between TOSYALI and Libya United Steel Company for Iron & Steel Industry (SULB), has placed orders with Midrex and SMS group for a direct reduced iron (DRI) complex based on MIDREX Flex® technology to be built in Benghazi. This investment is part of the company's ambition to become a major DRI supplier in the Mediterranean basin and on a global scale.

TOSYALI SULB agrees with Midrex and SMS for DRI complex in Libya

In the first phase, a cold DRI (CDRI) plant with a capacity of 2.5 million tons will be built. TOSYALI SULB will use MIDREX® technology, similar to the DRI plants operated by TOSYALI Algerie in Bethioua (Oran), Algeria. With MIDREX Flex®, the plants will initially run on natural gas and, as hydrogen becomes available, will take a significant step forward in green steel production by switching to hydrogen-based production.

“We are determined to be a pioneer in green steel production”

Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of TOSYALI Holding, said:
“We are excited to use our expertise in DRI plant operations and value-added steel production to transform the Libyan steel industry into an ecosystem that produces high-quality green steel products with low carbon emissions. We put environmental sustainability at the center of our operations and work to develop innovative solutions that reduce carbon emissions. With MIDREX technology, we will create value for the region and the world by leveraging the flexible use of natural gas and hydrogen to support the production of low-carbon, high-quality steel.”

Libya's DRI export capacity to grow

Ahmed Gadalla, President of Libya United Steel Company for Iron and Steel Industry (SULB), emphasized the strategic importance of the investment for the Libyan economy and steel industry, saying:
“TOSYALI SULB's first project will greatly increase Libya's DRI export capacity and make the country a hub for green steel production and a key contributor to decarbonization. This investment is not only a production facility, but also a strategic contribution to Libya's economic development and industrial infrastructure.”

Collaboration between MIDREX and SMS Group to be implemented

The technological infrastructure for the DRI plant will be supplied by Midrex Technologies, Inc. (Midrex), part of the SMS Group, which provides both HDRI (hot DRI) and CDRI plants for TOSYALI Algerie, and consortium partner Paul Wurth.

KC Woody, President and CEO of Midrex, commented on the project:
“We are grateful for TOSYALI's confidence in our company and our technology. We are proud of our market leadership in green iron production and look forward to working with TOSYALI on another project. At Midrex, we are committed to helping our customers achieve their decarbonization goals.”

Thomas Hansmann, Chief Technology Officer of SMS Group, underlined the long-standing cooperation with TOSYALI and said, “It is a privilege for SMS Group to be involved in this new project. This is our third project with TOSYALI and we remain committed to advancing sustainable practices.”

Midrex: Pioneering technology in green steel production

Midrex is the world leader in direct reduced iron production and the developer of the MIDREX® Process, designing, building and maintaining DRI plants for over 50 years. MIDREX plants account for approximately 80% of low CO2 DRI production worldwide. With a flexible choice of reducing sources and products, the plants can run on natural gas, hydrogen-assisted natural gas or 100% hydrogen.

With the completion of this investment, TOSYALI SULB will become one of the world's leading DRI suppliers, opening the door to a new era in Libya's steel industry.
