The Quebec government has announced its approval for provinces abundant in iron and nickel to resume mining operations, while still maintaining strict measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
Additionally, the government has lifted restrictions on various industries, particularly the construction of housing. Quebec officials have stated that approximately 40% of the nation's total iron ore production is supplied by Quebec.
However, the decision to reopen the mining sector has faced criticism from the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL), which argues that it jeopardizes efforts to slow down the spread of COVID-19 in the region. At present, mining companies in Quebec such as Champion Iron, ArcelorMittal Mines Canada, and New Millennium Iron Corp. (NML) have not provided immediate comments in response to the decision.
