Association of Major Steel Producers of Pakistan (PALSP) General Secretary Syed Wajid Bukhari stated that steel bar prices fell to Rs 300,000 per ton last month after reaching a peak of over Rs 245,000 per ton. He also expressed concern that prices would increase if the dollar continued to value.
According to data published by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the average price of iron and steel scrap per tonne dropped to $23. In September 2023, the arrival of scrap increased by 117.6 tons ($92,208 million) compared to the same period of the previous year, while imports in August 2023 were recorded as 210,325 tons ($97 million).
$25-30 increase in the last two weeks
Wajid Bukhari claimed that iron and steel scrap prices in the world market have increased by $25-30 per ton in the last two weeks. He also added that factories that took out loans sold rebar at a discount due to the troubled demand, and this situation caused great distress in the sector.
Pointing out that the fluctuations in the steel industry have increased due to the increase in global exchange rates, Bukhari warned that the difficulties in the sector may increase further if prices continue to rise in the coming period.
