In the current system, the "Foreign Trade Statistics by Provinces" announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) are based on the province where the headquarters of the firm is located. However, this approach leads to the clustering of statistics in the direction of the headquarters province for firms with different headquarters and production locations, and the exports made through a foreign trade firm are recorded in the province where the foreign trade firm is located instead of the province where production takes place.
For this reason, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Industry and Technology (MoIT) and TUIK jointly developed the "Provincial Export Statistics according to the Place of Production of Firms". In order to identify the provinces where production takes place, the Ministry of Trade matched exporter/manufacturer information with the Ministry of Industry and Technology's Industrial Registry Certificate Data, as well as the records of the Social Security Institution and the Revenue Administration.
The new system will generate provincial export statistics based on the production locations of firms and will be published in the "Monthly Foreign Trade Data Bulletin" on a provisional basis starting from January 2024. In addition, the Foreign Trade Statistics, which will be published by TUIK on 29 February 2024 within the scope of the Official Statistics Program, is planned to be shared with the public together with the January 2024 newsletter.
Export statistics by place of production indicate that industrialized provinces with high production volumes stand out. These statistics provide the opportunity for detailed analysis by province, product and country, and include important indicators such as the technological level of exports by province. This study is expected to make significant contributions to the data-based determination of province-based/regional policies.
