The Far East and the Arctic will take the most direct part in the creation of new shipyards and the construction of an ice-class fleet. This was reported to TASS by the head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East Alexey Chekunkov.
"According to the president's decision, a location in the Far East has already been chosen. The possibilities of creating it in the Arctic zone are being worked out. In my opinion, the Arkhangelsk Region has good chances at the site near Zvezdochka. There is a shipbuilding competence center with a long history there. Therefore, I think that both the Far East and the Arctic will take the most direct part in the construction of our ice-class fleet," Chekunkov said following the plenary session of the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk.
During the plenary session of the forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that "we need to act in all directions: to acquire and order ready-made vessels, to establish cooperation with global manufacturers and, in general, to build the entire system of Russian shipbuilding based on the strategic tasks that we face." He instructed governments to work out the issue of building new shipyards in Russia, "modern complex high-tech production facilities."
The VI International Arctic Forum "The Arctic - Territory of Dialogue" is being held for the first time in the Murmansk Region on March 26-27. The forum has become a key platform for discussing current issues of socio-economic development of the Arctic territories, developing multi-level multilateral mechanisms for joint disclosure and effective development of the powerful resource potential of the Arctic region. One of the main topics of the forum was the development of the Northern Sea Route in honor of the 500th anniversary of its development.
