THBB; Uncertainty continues in the construction sector

Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association (THBB) announced the “Ready-Mixed Concrete Index” 2023 March Report, which shows the situation in the manufacturing and service sectors related to construction and the expected developments.

While the Activity Index continued its positive course for 4 months, it reached the threshold value again in March after falling below the threshold value in February. The report pointed out that although confidence and expectations are still high compared to last year, it is not possible to predict the trend.

The evaluations of the Ready Mixed Concrete Index March Report are as follows: The Activity Index, which has maintained its positive course for 4 months, reached the threshold value again in March after falling below the threshold value in February.  On the other hand, Expectation and Confidence indices, could not maintain their upward trend in February and moved downwards in March. All three indices approached the threshold value line, and in parallel, the Ready Mixed Concrete Index headed towards the same point. There is no predominant aspect in the indices.

All 3 indices, except for the activity, increased compared to the same month of the previous year. On the other hand, the activity,  showed a limited regression compared to the previous year. Confidence and expectation indices, which showed an increase in February compared to the previous year, were also on the rise, but there was a proportional decrease. Considering the previous chart, although confidence and expectations are still high compared to last year, it does not seem possible to predict the trend.

Yavuz Işık, Chairman of the Board of THBB, evaluated the efforts to renew the housing stock after the earthquake disaster. Stating that the housing stock came to the fore after the earthquake disaster and accelerated the urban transformation activities against possible earthquakes, especially in Istanbul, Işık said, “It is possible to transform the existing housing stock without delay by removing all obstacles to the implementation of the urban transformation model in the most efficient way, with public support and for the benefit of all stakeholders. As the first task in the post-election period, determining the steps to be taken by bringing all the stakeholders of the construction together with a multilateral consensus, to draw up a roadmap and to share this with the public.” He used his expressions.
