Tata Steel, the leading steel mill in India, is planning to establish a scrap-based steel mill in Ludhiana, Northern India. The location was chosen due to its proximity to an industrial area and the auto hub where the company can get scrap easily.
The steel mill will produce long steel products, with an annual production capacity of 750,000 tons. The mill operation was expected to start within two years.
Besides, Tata Steel is also looking to set up electric arc furnace-based recycling plants in Southern India, as part of its plan to reach 36 million tons per year in its domestic producing capacity.
If the route of electric arc furnace is successful, Tata Steel will replicate it across India, moving towards its target to reach an annual domestic capacity of 36 to 40 million tons.
