Tata Steel UK appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the main contractor to accelerate the decarbonization process last January, but after permanently shutting down its coking and blast furnace operations last year, the company has embarked on a comprehensive transformation program to transition to low carbon steel production. It announced that it has signed a contract with Skanska for a project to build a state-of-the-art EAF at Port Talbot. Skanska will be responsible for the design and project management of this large-scale transformation and will undertake the planning of critical sections such as building foundations, structural design and site infrastructure for the new electric arc furnace. The design of the drainage systems is also included in Skanska's area of responsibility.
According to the planned project, EAF equipment with an annual capacity of 3.2 million tons will be installed and preparatory work will start in the first quarter of 2025. In the third quarter of 2025, the main construction, structure and building works are expected to start and the new equipment will be operational by the end of 2027.
