Tata Steel UK has announced a significant step forward in transforming the steelmaking process at its Port Talbot site. The company is aiming for a more sustainable and efficient production model by adapting its production method (EAF) technology.
In the October of 2023, Tata Steel UK placed an order with Italy-based Tenova for an electric arc furnace and other advanced production equipment, aiming to decarbonize the Port Talbot plant. As part of this, existing converters and support infrastructure will be dismantled, and some of the older equipment will be refurbished to accommodate next-generation production processes.
Under the transformation plan, the company will also install two new ladle metallurgy furnaces at the plant, aiming to improve steel quality. This development marks an important step to meet more demanding product requirements and to fulfill customer demands.
